The Vet just called

The Vet that was on duty on Kuma's last day just called. It is one week later. No, she said she hadn't been away, she was too busy to call.

When asked about Kuma's last dose of anticonvulsant

Phenobarbital she said she did not give her any more. She said she was worried that her heart would stop. She said she knew Kuma would start seizing without this medication but she said she did not want her heart to stop so she made a choice.

She agreed that Kuma was starting to wake up but that was because she wasn't given the anticonvulsant.

I said that Kuma was getting the minimum dose of 2.5 mg and after talking with the previous days Vet and seeing that Kuma's liver values were very good, I had asked to increase her dose to a normal dose for her size, 5.0 mg. I asked this Vet if she gave her this dose. She said no, because she is an old dog and it would be too much for her. So she decided to give her no dose at all. I asked her why was I not informed of this. Why did she not tell me this when I was there? In fact, she called me in the morning at 11:00 am and told me Kuma was still sleeping, and when I said I would be there in an hour, she said no hurry, there is no change. Then she mentioned Cheryl and I stopped her and said Cheryl has not seen Kuma for four years.

I was there and she said nothing about her worries about Kuma's heart stopping and she did not tell me she decided not to give her any more Phenobarbital. The other vets did not mention any worries about her heart and their plan was to keep Kuma on Phenobarbital for the rest of her life.

I told her that Kuma was waking up and then went into a seizure. She said it was because she stopped her anticonvulsant. I said that Kuma was seizing for 30 minutes while they fumbled around trying to stop her heart. She said, "I'm sorry you had to see that". I said that I finally told the Vet to just put it directly in her vein. She said he was not supposed to do that because the chemical could burn her.

I don't understand what the Vet had planned. She said that she made the choice because she thought Kuma's heart could not take it. A minimal dose which Kuma should have been on for the rest of her life would have killed her. So she had to make a choice. She knew stopping would in itself cause Kuma to seize, so what kind of decision was that. And she did not tell me about her decision. Our regular Vet said that Kuma's heart was very strong. I already knew that.
